teaching an old dog new tricks...

Saturday, January 28, 2012

Spent a good chunk of time today trying to make my blog a little less boring. Why does this have to be so difficult?!? Maybe it is just me...

Adding some new links, etc. to make navigation easier -------------------->>>>>>>

It doesn't look like much, but man, there is a learning curve to this. If anyone knows of any great tutorial/ how to sites for this type of thing, please share :)

Also, if you know how to make the gagets on the side bar closer together (less spaced out)- I would love to learn how.

Hope you are having a great weekend!

first pendant

Thursday, January 19, 2012

I thought it would be fun to share one of the first pendants I ever made. It is still one of my all time favorites.

Our assignment (in college ceramics) was to find a recipe and make our own glaze. In searching online for glaze recipes, I discovered Etsy (aha!- light bulb). Also, I found this glaze recipe. My favorite glaze ever. It is a satin-matte that ranges from aqua- turquoise-white- almost a purple. I have no idea where I found the recipe and I have since lost it. Even if I found it one day, I probably wouldn't be able to replicate the firing conditions. *sigh.....*

I don't make my own glazes anymore, but would like to someday (when I have a studio outside of our home). If anyone out there in blog-land knows this recipe and wants to share, I would love you forever. Here is is again on a set of jars I made in college.

I made luke wear this pendant on our wedding day ;)

Thanks for stopping by,

It must be the cold..and the dump of snow we just got.

has me dreaming of here (we stayed in this little cottage, on a tiny caye- surrounded by a tropical reef.

have me longing for this place.

remind me of the best fruit I've ever eaten.

brings me back to the ruins and the rainforest.

ahhhh.......(enough said)

The countdown to vacation has begun. It helps me get through these next cold, dark, snowy months. All of these vacation pics were taken in Belize in 2009. I am beyond excited to say we will be going back there for round 2 in March. One of my absolute favorite places to travel.

All of these pendants will be making their way into my shop.

test firing

Why is it when you reeeallly want something to turn out, it doesn't. So far, I haven't been able to get the folk art bird pendants to live up to what I see in my head. Don't worry, I'm not giving up yet...

See how fuzzy the drawing is? I'm thinking I just put to much clear glaze over top. *curses*

And then there are these...
Completely opposite of the birds....totally unplanned. I saw the glaze and had a little 'aha' and thought of a lesson I did with kids a couple years ago. I found some unglazed bisque beads, slapped the glaze on and VIOLA!
They remind me of a painter's smock- splatter-y, drippy, messy. I kind of love them.

As promised, Oldies but Goodies. I re-made some of my older designs, refined the design and tried them in some new glazes/ glaze combos. These and more will be available in my shop soon!

I'm loving this new denim glaze.

One year ago...

Sunday, January 8, 2012

One year ago today, Luke and I walked down the sandy isle and in front of our family, hotel on-lookers, beach peddlers and another wedding party (long story), we said our vows. Luke is the behind the scenes guy of 'kylie parry studios' and I really couldn't do it without him. From loving and supporting me, to changing out kiln elements, to helping me at art shows, he always has my back, and I love that about him :)

We met at a summer camp. We were both trip leaders- we took groups of city-slickers out into the woods and taught them wilderness survival skills....you know...like how to make smores and raccoon proof your coolers. After a brief introduction, Luke and I paddled a 3-day canoe trip in 9 hours (learning the route we would take kids on later that summer). Not your typical "first date". Naturalist Luke says the moment I correctly identified a Basswood tree from our canoe, he knew I was the one :) Damn...I'm glad I paid attention in 7th grade.

Shabby chic

I shared this on my facebook page a week or so ago...

Here is the finished project! Instead of glazing, I painted using acrylics and distressed it with sandpaper and stain. I'm not sure if I will ever offer these up for sale....I've tossed around the idea of maybe making a few to sell at summer art shows. Until that day comes, I need to find a home on my walls for this little guy :)
